Laura and I are expecting our second child in three to six weeks. And no, we don’t know the sex, and we’re not going to find out. I’m actually surprised how few people actually wait and find out the sex the old fashioned way — once the baby is born. “It’s a girl!” or “it’s a boy!” are one of the few pure, joyous and magnificent surprises we have as adults. Why do so many people want to spoil it? It reminds me of when I was little and I looked forward to surprise birthday gifts. As soon as they went away, the fun and excitement around birthdays deflated as well. I’m not suggesting that a birth is any less if the parents already know the sex, but for Laura and me, the surprise makes the birth better.
I can’t wait to meet this new person!
