Rest In Peace, Grandfather

My Grandfather, Alfred Norbury Brown, died this past Saturday at age 93. He had his quirks, but always was one of my favorite people. He embodied curiosity, drive and authenticity. We shared a love for sailing, and a common obsession with practicality. He also was a pioneer in social media — far before there ever was an Internet. And nearly a decade ago — at 83 — he actually got on the Internet and made it part of his daily routine. While his body was signaling the end, just two-and-a-half weeks ago he was quizzing me about my new startup — his mind was that sharp. Most importantly, he dedicated himself to Nanna, and he loved his family.

Julian, Laura and I are going down to Holly Hill, Florida tomorrow to participate in a simple, Quaker funeral service, which takes place on Thursday. Rest in peace, Grandfather. Below is a picture of him with Nanna, Julian and me, taken on December 26, 2007.
