The WSJ reports that TiVo will offer Web video services at no extra charge to its TV subscribers, in a partnership with Brightcove. TiVo has offered similar video feeds to its Internet-connected DVRs for some time, in the form of advertiser infotainment. But this deal marks the entrance of more premium content, which ultimately forces the question: what then is the value of a television network when you don’t need their pipelines? For television networks to survive, they will need focus on becoming affinity hubs, and extend far beyond just television.
